Searle attempts to disprove that a sufficiently sophisticated programmed computer gives that computer cognition, and thereby explain human cognition. He argues that the computer only follows a string of tasks based on programs but does not in itself understand these tasks. The computer works with syntax, not semantics. It has no intentionality. He proved this claim through the “Chinese Room” thought experiment. The Chinese Room is a compelling argument and it proves the claim sufficiently.
